Blog tasks: Daily Mirror case study

 1) Write the definition of the following key language for newspaper front pages (you may want to add an example for each from our Daily Mirror CSP):


Masthead: the title  block of a newspaper 

Pug: something to catch the readers eye

Splash Head: the lead story  

Slogan: the ethos of the newspaper 

Dateline: when it was published

Kicker: story made to draw interest

Byline: gives the name of the journalist

Standfirst: introducing paragraph usually in bold


2) How much does a copy of the Daily Mirror cost? (Note: the current cost is different to the CSP edition - we recommend learning both). 90p


3) What are the main stories on the CSP edition of the Daily Mirror (see above)? Make sure you learn the headline and what the stories are about. the front page has many story's like summit to save the world, heat is on, no 1 football pull-out.


4) Why is the choice of news stories and content on the Mirror CSP front page typical of a tabloid newspaper?

 In tabloids are seen as  newspapers for  uneducated people who prefer pictures to the newspaper's e.g. daily mirror  use them to attract people


5) What is the balance on the Daily Mirror front page between images, headlines and text?

 this so the  people who are deemed uneducated are able to under understand/comprehend  what is going on in the world 



Representations


1) What political party does the Daily Mirror support? Is there any evidence to support this in the CSP pages we have studied? they support  the Labour party as they they usually show dislike to the conservatives and show respect to labour 


2) How does the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards represent ordinary British people?

The Awards celebrate extraordinary achievements of people of all ages, from children of courage to lifesaving emergency workers, inspirational fundraisers and people who make the world a better place, in local communities and on a national or even global scale this down to show ordinary people are just as important as celebrities.


3) How is climate change as an issue represented in the Daily Mirror? What evidence can you provide from the CSP pages to support this? the co26   is shown as extreme and and potentially world ending and picture of Boris johns is shown of him looking stressed 


4) How are environmental protesters like Greta Thunberg represented in the Daily Mirror? Look at the inside pages to answer this.  Greta is shown to be both right but annoying


5) How are different countries and political leaders represented in the Daily Mirror? Does this reinforce or subvert the stereotypes we usually see in the media?  they subvert the role of female political leader as they are seen as strong in this image while  Boris Johnson looks to be excluded from the conversation also subverting stereotypes however  the other male  leaders are reinforcing the the idea that they know what they are doing
